I will do number two. Using the amount of rain that falls seasonally won't work because you need to break it down into smaller bits ( like days or weeks). In the spring, you might get more rain than in the summer, resulting in an inconsistent representation of how it would affect the Whopping-cranes. If you measure with days or weeks, you will get a more accurate representation of the effect on Whopping-cranes throughout the year.
