BIOLOGY Course Description (For Lab Rats Level)
The Biology curriculum is designed to continue student investigations of the life sciences that began in grades K-8 and provide students the necessary skills to be proficient in biology. Biology is primarily centered on learning about the structure and function of living things at the cellular level, but also includes the study of the history and nature of science, microscopy, biochemistry, cellular structure & function, cellular energy processes, reproduction, genetics, evolution, classification, native plants, ecology, anatomy & physiology and the structure and functions of the human body. Students will also learn more abstract concepts such as the interdependence of organisms, the relationship of matter, energy, and organization in living systems, the behavior of organisms, and biological evolution. Students will investigate biological concepts through experience in laboratories and field work using the processes of scientific inquiry.

EARTH SCEINCE Course Description (For Lab Rats Level)
Earth Science is designed to continue student investigations into connections among Earth’s characteristics and systems throughout history and the universe. Students will study varying characteristics, time periods and systems of Earth and our universe, including the nature of science, mapping, matter and change, minerals, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, weathering, erosion, soil, mass movements, wind, glaciers, surface and groundwater, atmosphere, meteorology, the nature of storms, climate, oceans, the marine environment, plate tectonics, volcanism, earthquakes, mountains, fossils and the rock record, Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras, natural and energy resources, human impact on resources, the Sun-Earth-Moon system, the solar system, stars, galaxies, and the universe. This course develops explanations of phenomena fundamental to the sciences of geology, physical geography, early Earth history, landform evolution, the geological record, weather, climate, and the history of life on Earth.

PHYSICAL SCEINCE Course Description (For Lab Rats Level)
The Physical Science curriculum is designed to continue student investigations of the physical sciences that began in grades K-8 and provide students the necessary skills to have a richer knowledge base in physical science. This course is designed to provide a review of the concepts learned in Earth Science and offer an introduction to concepts for Chemistry. This curriculum covers concepts in Earth and Space Science, Chemistry, Motion, Forces and Motion, Forces in Fluids, Work, Power, Machines, Energy, Thermal Energy and Heat, Mechanical Waves and Sound, The Electromagnetic Spectrum and Light, Optics, Electricity, and Magnetism includes the more abstract concepts such as the conceptualization of the structure of atoms, motion and forces, and the conservation of energy and matter, the action/reaction principle, and wave behavior. Students further explore these physical science concepts through experience in weekly laboratory investigations and field work using the processes of inquiry and scientific method.

CHEMISTRY Course Description (For Lab Rats Level)
The Chemistry curriculum is designed to continue student investigations of the physical sciences that began in grades K-8 and provide students the necessary skills to be proficient in chemistry. This curriculum includes more abstract concepts such as the structure of atoms, structure and properties of matter, and the conservation and interaction of energy and matter. Students investigate chemistry concepts through experience in laboratories and field work using the processes of inquiry. Chemistry students use the periodic table to help with the identification of elements with particular properties, recognize patterns that lead to explain chemical reactivity and bond formation. They use the IUPAC nomenclature in order to predict chemical names for ionic (binary and ternary), acidic, and inorganic covalent compounds, and conduct experiments to manipulate factors that affect chemical reactions. Course concepts include matter, energy, atoms, moles, ionic and covalent bonds, chemical equations, chemical reactions, causes of change, states of matter, intermolecular forces, gases, solutions, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, reaction rates, oxidation and reduction, electrochemistry, nuclear, carbon, organic, and biological chemistry.
